Decks and Thwart


The thwart is a structural crosspiece that can also act as a backrest for the paddler.

The bow and stern decks are made from cedar strips, just like the hull.

Dry fit and then glue the deck planking.

Glue the deck to the hull. The dark spots in the photo (below right) are epoxy and sawdust used to fill small voids so the fiberglass will lay smoothly on the deck.

Below: Fiberglass with 1st coat of epoxy resin. The excess fiberglass will be trimmed and two more coats of epoxy will be added to bury the weave of the fiberglass.

Varnish

After the final coats of epoxy have fully cured (a week or more), the canoe was sanded smooth and then varnished (4 coats).
